Always history! I remember falling in love with it during the 5th grade, not sure if my teacher was just great, but I loved learning about American history. I loved all of my history classes in junior high and high school too. And I thought very hard about what to study in college, but I ended up majoring in history because I loved it so much. Research and writing papers were my favorite things (okay maybe not the writing part but finishing the project was always nice).
Now after university I still love history, sometimes I forget how much until I open a history book and fall in love again. History has played a crucial role in the inspiration for my novels. The very obvious ones being European medieval and Renaissance history, but there is also a lot of early modern and modern things that I use as well. The histories and peoples of Central Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa are huge inspirations as well. For the past year or so I’ve been in the mood for histories of decolonization and revolutions. I’m sure themes will find their way into my writing as well.
So I’m off to find another history book to read! One that gives me hope and an inspiration to write.
