Fred Hampton

Daily writing prompt
If you could meet a historical figure, who would it be and why?

This might be a deep cut, but I would love to meet Fred Hampton. He was chairman of the Black Panther Party in Chicago, and started the Rainbow Coalition which brought together many different groups of people from around Chicago. From gangs to other groups that advocated for Hispanics and poor whites. He and the Black Panthers helped organize free breakfast programs for students, blood drives, and free health clinics in Chicago.

He was an amazing orator. I want to sit down with him and learn the way his mind worked, what he envisioned for the future, how to successfully unite groups that are different from one another to achieve a common goal of liberation from oppression.

He had some great quotes as well. I wish he had lived a longer life, he would be 76 years old if the FBI hadn’t assassinated him at 21. I know he would have a lot to say about the world today.

Quotes:

“Nothing is more important than stopping fascism, because fascism is gonna stop us all.”

“You can jail a Revolutionary, but you can’t jail the Revolution.”

“Why don’t you live for the people? Why don’t you struggle for the people? Why don’t you die for the people?”

“We’re not a racist organization because we understand that racism is an excuse used for capitalism, and we know that racism is a byproduct of capitalism.”

“Say that, ‘I am a revolutionary.’ I am a revolutionary. Say it when you going out.”
